Our Portland Campus Features:
The "Dan" The Daniel Crewe Gymnasium is a multipurpose building that serves as the headquarters for Breakwater Enrichment Center. This building features a basketball court, climbing wall, aerial dancing rigging, playrooms and a teaching kitchen!
Nason's Corner Park: A partnership between Breakwater, the City of Portland, the Nason’s Corner Neighborhood Association, and Portland Trails, our outdoor natural playground has structures built into and out of the earth including running hills, slides, climbing walls and tunnels. The park also encompasses sporting fields and an outdoor stage in addition to our early childhood playgrounds. Nason’s Corner Park, is a public park owned by the City of Portland. The spaces are utilized by Breakwater School during school hours and available to the entire community at all other times, contributing to a vital community connection to Portland.
The "Jessie", The Jessie Bullens-Crewe Building is another multipurpose building with a computer lab, tech lab complete with 3D printers and vinyl cutter, and our auditorium. This building houses our summer theater program, summer noontime show, tech and theater after school and enrichment classes, music lessons, and other programming.
The “Brick Building”: The main Breakwater building is utilized for summer camp programs, enrichment classes, and music lessons. On the first floor, you will find the John W. Knight Curiosity Lab that we use for tinkering and wood working enrichment classes and summer camps. Just upstairs you will find our multimedia Sky Lounge that we use for music lessons and our art studio. The garden level houses our Wanderers (toddler) and Discovers (preschool age) summer camps.
Off campus adventures: Many of our enrichment classes, vacation camps, and summer camps go on daily or weekly field trips taking advantage of all that Southern Maine has to offer! Some of our favorite spots include
Fore River Sanctuary - our campus is adjacent to the wonderful Fore River Sanctuary which allows for hiking and exploration opportunities for enrichment classes and camps.
Jessie Bullens-Crewe Nature Preserve: Breakwater's own 22 acre nature preserve in Cumberland, ME, commonly referred to as ‘Jessieland,’ was generously donated by a late student’s family in her memory. Jessie was a lover of the outdoors, which makes Jessieland a perfect tribute to her. Jessieland features trails, an extensive shelter building area, a fire pit sheltered under a pavilion, two composting toilets, and a rambling stream to explore.
